A very cool announcement today that I would like to share with you. Today, we’ve united with HR Bloggers to create a comprehensive online community for members of the HR profession. We will offer a portal for professionals to seek and give advice, stay on top of trends, and explore innovative ways to keep the workplace working.

We’ve come a long way since I started this little project. I am happy that we will continue growing the site in a positive direction.

If you were a member at HR Bloggers, your membership information and the social network has been moved to network.hrmtoday.com

If you had a blog at HRM Today, it has been relocated to blogs.hrmtoday.com

Talent Management Summit in Vegas

Posted on 18. July 2008 by Lance Haun

I wanted to let HRM Today readers know about the 11th Annual Talent Management Summit being held in Las Vegas by Human Resources IQ on October 20-23 and a special discount you all can get just for reading this blog. Very exciting, I know. I was trying to get them to commit to maybe some trick ponies or some of those guys that juggle flaming bowling balls because I heard those are a big hit but I think they are sticking to stuff that is actually useful to HR professionals.

I just wanted to highlight a few things that this conference has to offer:

I am bummed I can’t go because I do like going to Vegas (I was just there a couple weeks ago) but Human Resources IQ are the good guys and they’ve done ten of these things so I think they might know a thing or two. Human Resource IQ is around for the same reason HRM Today is around: HR people helping other HR people navigate the changing environment. When I was talking to their marketing manager, it seems like they really want to attract people who understand the online aspect of our industry. They are reaching out to a lot of bloggers to have them attend this event (via discounts and even complimentary press passes) and I told them I’d be happy to spread the word (even if I can’t go).

It gets even better. If you use the promo code TMHRM when you sign up, you’ll get a 15% discount just like that. Seriously! Then you can work on getting the upgraded suite at the Venetian. Don’t get your hopes up on that though.

How does HRM Today scale up?

Posted on 11. July 2008 by Lance Haun

This week has been full of wins for HRM Today but that’s not what I want to talk about. What I do want to talk about is how we plan to scale up our site from this point forward. The amount of content being submitted to the network is growing larger and it needs to be addressed. I want to leave you with these thoughts for the weekend.

  • We want a lot of content! That means continuing to encourage contributors to come to HRM Today and start blogging. I want to start everyone off now as an author which means they can post to their blog as little or often as they like without me moderating (as is currently set up).
  • With that, we are only going to really moderate front page postings and limiting them to the highest quality content. That means front page posts are going to include original content and high quality syndicated stuff. As much as possible, we are going to do full posts on the front page.
  • The feed will be divided up into “All postings” and “Front page postings only.” Default feed will be front page with high visibility put into the all postings feed too.
  • People with sites that automatically feed into the site will continue indefinitely.
  • There will always be an editor deciding what goes up on the front page but I want there to be a social aspect to decide what articles we missed.
  • I keep saying “we” when there is only “me” but I don’t feel like going back and changing it now.

Anyway I kept going back and forth and if we have 50 contributors to the site pouring in feeds, original content and all the good stuff we want (100+ items posted a day let’s say), HRM Today becomes a news aggregator which was never really the purpose. For those who want that, they can still get that (through the all posts feed) but I think for the majority of people, that’s just too much. I have deleted far more posts that have come in than have been posted because I don’t want to kill people with HR overload.

The three pronged goal is to obviously serve readers with HR industry specific blogs, allow others to join the conversation effortlessly (with a community element) and grow the HR blogging community for the better. I think this tweak continues us on that path.

I am going to start next Monday with an original post by HR Minion and switching everyone from contributors to authors. The featured category will be posts that make it to the front page and in the main RSS feed. All other blog posts that do not make it on the front page will continue to be posted to the respective author blog, category, and date archive as well as the all blogs RSS feed.

HRM Today Now Partnering with HR Bloggers

Posted on 7. July 2008 by Lance Haun

In a deal scratched over a couple hours of e-mailing (including a quip about someone’s grandma), I am pleased to announce a sponsorship deal with Laurie Ruettimann’s HR Bloggers group (www.hrbloggers.com). This is a deal that makes a lot of sense for both parties but let me outline some of my goals with the sponsorship of the group:

  1. Grow a social network for HR bloggers – I like writing blogs, I don’t like running social networks. That being said, I think the benefits of social networks are huge. Upping the level of conversation between HR people is something I think blogs and social networks both accomplish.
  2. Grow the number of HR bloggers - There needs to be more of us and we need to stop being wimps about blogging. I have learned a ton about recruiting from dedicated, grassroots recruiting communities like recruitingblogs.com, recruiting.com and the multitude of recruiting bloggers having robust conversations about their trade. HR needs that now more than ever.
  3. Grow my site – Usually a sponsorship involves money so I made a calculation that this will help build HRM Today into a better site with more visitors and a better product for readers. With more visitors and better product, we can start talking about revenue opportunities as well as rev share opportunities that reward people for posting content to the network.

The best part about this deal is the hope that each will continue to do what each does best (social networking and blogging) and that the changes made will be ones that increase the number of users and increase the quality of the respective sites. The optimal goal from my end is that if an HR pro wants to get plugged in to the online HR community, they can become a part of both HR Bloggers and HRM Today and they instantly have a network of other HR professionals.

Is this an idea that resonates with you? If so, do two things:

  1. Sign up for accounts on HR Bloggers and HRM Today
  2. Invite HR colleagues to join both with you

That’s it! Instant community.
