Don’t Use Money, Honey

On my posting about making pay a secondary issue, I received a comment regarding a problem with mundane jobs.  My astute reader indicated that there are always necessary positions that have tedious and boring tasks that no one wants to do and that pay and benefits are the only ways that can attract people to these jobs.

It is true that you may be able to hire people to perform these jobs because of the money and because unskilled candidates don’t qualify for other more challenging jobs.  But, the money will not make them happy in jobs they don’t like.  All you have done is make them unhappy prisoners – employees who are on your payroll, who are discontent and are not going anywhere.  This is not a good situation.
