If I made-up a David Letterman type list for why we went into HR in the first place, it might look like this:
10. Nobody else wanted to, so we thought we better.
9. We got failing grades in our science and math classes.
8. We used to love working with people.
7. We got talked into transferring from another department.
6. Someone in HR said we would be good at it.
5. We were in a job rotation program and once we got in, we couldn’t rotate out.
4. It looked like an easy job.
3. We thought it would be fun.
2. We thought that the perks were better.
1. We were idealists. We wanted to help. We had intentions of making a difference. We believed that the only resources in an organization were the human resources – that everything evolved from them. We thought of ourselves as catalysts to making it all happen. We believed in human beings and all that they could do. We thought that we would be the hub of the organization. We thought of our mission as honorable and worthy. We had a vision and a cause. We had a dream. We weren’t exactly sure about it, but we had the faith that it would be a memorable journey. We knew that Numbers 2-10 were insignificant to our number 1 reason.
